Welcoming Community

Four years ago, Audra and Vernon Kirkwood secured a spot for their son Myles, who is now 24 years old, on the waitlist to become an intern in J-Cares. Though Myles was still in high school with two years to go, they didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity of this “amazing program.” Little did they know that J-Cares would become such an integral part of Myles’ life and provide him with countless opportunities to grow, learn, and make meaningful connections.

Myles joined J-Cares during the pandemic and has been participating ever since. Audra shared that Myles absolutely loves everything about the program. J-Cares has managed to create a supportive and engaging environment for Myles and the other interns. J-Cares’ inclusive approach allows Myles to enjoy experiences he wouldn’t have access to elsewhere, such as swimming, karaoke, and creating art. These activities not only bring joy to Myles’ life but also help him develop important skills and build relationships with his peers.

Audra says Myles has become happier and has grown so much through the program, especially with overnight trips that have helped him become more independent and responsible, and improved his socialization skills. The J-Cares mentors are incredibly supportive and attentive, always challenging the interns to push themselves and reach their full potential. Audra is grateful for the way J-Cares’ mentors care for the interns, challenging them to go as far as they can go. She finds it beautiful and is happy with what’s happening here.

J-Cares treats each intern as an individual and tailors programs to their needs and interests, improving their quality of life, physical, social, and emotional development, and fostering friendships, and community involvement. The program has had a profound impact on Myles’ life, and Audra and Vernon couldn’t be happier with the progress he has made.

Myles wakes up each morning excited about what’s in store for him at J-Cares. He loves the daily schedule and tells his parents that he loves his life and J-Cares. The program has allowed Myles to thrive and has given him opportunities he wouldn’t have had otherwise. Audra and Vernon have formed a community with other parents that offer support in ways they’ve never experienced before. They anticipate expanding their own social connections within the J-Cares family, and are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful program.
