JCC Rising Tide Swim Team
- Session I: Adults 18 and Over (10:30 - 11:30am)
- Session II: Ages 6 - 12 Years (11:30am - 12:30pm)
The JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team is a volunteer organization that seeks to introduce individuals with special needs to the wonders of swimming. As part of Special Olympics New Jersey Somerset County Area 10 we compete in three swim meets throughout the season: county, area, and state. We seek to provide an enriching and welcoming environment for swimmers with special needs ages 10, and up. Athletes participating in this program should have a basic knowledge of swimming and be able to comfortably swim one length (25 yards) of freestyle and one length (25 yards) of backstroke.
If you or an athlete is interested in joining, please contact Stephanie Johnson, Head Coach/Local Training Program Coordinator at 908-443-9020 or SJohnson@ssbjcc.org.
Special Needs Swimming Skills Program
All classes will be taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors who have experience and certification in the special needs area. This program will be directly supervised by Paulette Kirchner, a public school special education teacher for 27 years and is under the direction of Stephanie Johnson, Aquatics Director/Special Olympics Local Training Program Coordinator. These lessons will be taught on a one on one basis. Lessons include instruction on how to float independently and with a device, how to control breathing, kicking, basic paddling, front crawl, back stroke and jumping/diving into the pool. Participants will also receive special attention and instruction that may help develop competency in the water as well as improve overall coordination, strength, endurance, range of movement, as well as social and attending behaviors.
If you would like more information on either program, please contact Stephanie Johnson, Head Coach/Local Training Program Coordinator at 908-443-9020 or SJohnson@ssbjcc.org.
