Ambassador Ido Aharoni, Consul General of Israel, was the guest speaker at the 3rd Annual A Night to Celebrate Israel. The event  -- co-sponsored by  Israel Bonds and Jewish LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) a community-wide Jewish adult education program serving residents of Somerset, Hunterdon, & Warren Counties -- took place on March 26 at Raritan Valley Country Club with over 200 guests in attendance.

A day for dogs! The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC recently held its Third Annual Dog Day at the J event featuring a wide variety of services and products for dogs and their families.  Dog Day was free to the community and was held at the JCC, located on Talamini Road in Bridgewater.  Dog Day also featured contests, pet tricks, an animal blessing, animal rescue and adoption agencies, and a special appearance by Sparkee.  Proceeds from Dog Day benefit The JCC Scholarship Fund. Adler Aphasia Center Offers Aphasia Communication Group in Bridgewater

The Adler Aphasia Center is currently offering a communication group for people with aphasia at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC in Bridgewater, NJ. This group provides those who have been diagnosed with aphasia an opportunity to socialize with others who share similar experiences, provide tips to communicate more effectively, and provide time to practice communication skills in a natural environment. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by stroke or other brain injury. It affects spoken language, reading and writing, but does not affect one’s intellect. This group is facilitated by a licensed speech language pathologist and is offered every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 9:30-11:30 am.

I started playing golf after I graduated college.  In fact, I had made the joke that now I was out of college, I needed to learn to play because that's where all the business wheeling and dealing is done.  Of course, that joke turned into golf clubs as a graduation gift.  Now that I had the clubs, I needed to learn to play.  I had no worldly business anywhere near a golf course when I began and I didn't know if I would stick with it.  As the years have past, I have come to love this game and I decided to look back at some of the lessons I've learned playing this frustrating, annoying and stupid game.

The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is pleased to announce that five local teens have been selected to represent the community for Project Gesher.  This exciting new program will accept 24 teens from Grade 9 representing different participating JCC communities:  Bridgewater, Central/MetroWest, Margate and Wilmington, DE. There will also be 24 teens from the Partnership2Gether (P2G) Israel communities of Ofakim and Arad. The Project Gesher program provides a unique opportunity for teens to explore and experience Israel and its people.

Purim is now upon us. Many of us will dress in costume. Others of us will hear the Megilla, or Scroll of Esther, read in synagogue and then join together for a festive meal. We have a mandate to give tzedaka on Purim, and also to give gifts to our friends to celebrate our ancient victory. Some of us will have a drink to commemorate the many wine parties in the book.

Born in Irvington, New Jersey, Barbara learned through her creative family very early on that art and drawing were her passion. From this point on, she would draw her way through life.

Upon graduation from Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, further studies would include The School of Visual Art in New York City focusing on fine art and illustration. Her sons, Shawn and Max were her inspiration to continue the adventure of a creative career as a freelance artist and designer.
