EXERCISE OF THE MONTH: Wood Chop on Cable Machine

Muscle groups: Core, Abdominals, Obliques
Benefits: Strength training and stability in the transverse plane

Wood Chop: Low to High

HOW TO DO IT:

  1. Adjust the cable arm to the low position. Grab the handle with both hands and arms extended. Stand so that the side you are pulling from is perpendicular to the weight stack.
  2. In a bent knee squat position, perform a low to high wood chop pattern as you squat up.
  3. As you rotate, allow the back leg to pivot on the ball of the foot.
  4. Return to the start position for the desired amount of reps.

Wood Chop: High to Low

HOW TO DO IT:

  1. Adjust the cable arm to the high position. Grab the handle with both hands and arms extended. Stand so that the side you are pulling from is perpendicular to the weight stack.
  2. In a standing upright position, perform a high to low wood chop pattern as you squat down.
  3. As you rotate, allow the back leg to pivot on the ball of the foot.
  4. Return to the start position for the desired amount of reps
